Product Information
A proper understanding of “NPK” is the foundation of learning about soil health and fertility. The NPK listed above shows the proportion of the three most important nutrients: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). These three numbers represent the N-P-K ratio. For example, our most popular blend has an NPK of 9-12-7, which indicates 9% nitrogen, 12% phosphorus, and 7% potassium. Sometimes a product’s NPK is followed by more numbers and abbreviations. This indicates other important nutrient contents like – calcium (Ca), sulfur (S), or magnesium (Mg).
Your soil pH indicates the alkalinity or acidity in your soil. A neutral soil pH is 7. Alkaline soil pH is over 7 and acidic soil pH is under 7. A 6.4 soil pH is ideal for optimal growing conditions except for fruit trees.
Nitrogen (N)
Nitrogen is the most abundant element on earth and is needed by all plants. A biologically active soil supplies most of a plants’ needs. Nitrogen can be positive or negative, depending on the product or carrier. Nitrate nitrogen is a minus charge and promotes foliage growth. Ammoniacal nitrogen carries a positive charge and promotes reproductive growth. Good sources of supplemental nitrogen are manure, compost, and fish.
Phosphorus (P)
Phosphorus is the mineral that promotes rooting and fruiting. The best sources are straw manure, compost, or rock phosphate. In the past our phosphorus source was primarily soft rock phosphate, mined in Florida. Today we have a new source of phosphorus (Phos-Agri) that is mined in Utah and has 14% phosphorus in plant usable form, when applied to the soil. Soil life will convert it into plant usable form as needed by the crop. Rock Phosphate contains large amounts of trace elements. Phosphorus is a triple negative charged element.
Potassium (K)
Potassium supplies most of the bulk of plants; the thickness of leaves and stalks, fruit set, and fruit size. Potassium is a positive charged mineral. Too much potassium competes with calcium in plants and makes them more prone to disease and insects. Good sources of potassium are manure, compost, wood ashes – and raw additives: Sol-Po-Mag, Sulfate-of-Potash, Kelp, and Super Sulfur Potash.
Calcium (Ca)
Plants, as well as humans and livestock, need a steady supply of calcium to maintain good health. Many other minerals react to calcium to create the correct chemistry. Calcium can pry clay particles apart in the soil and help loosen compaction. Calcium is a positive charged element, thus will increase the pH of your soil. Hi-Cal Pelletized Lime is the most common solution to correct major deficiencies in the soil. Sulfur lowers your calcium levels and relaeses other nutrients that become tied up in high calcium soils.
Sulfur (S)
Sulfur is a negative charged mineral and is the most effective mineral to use in high pH (high calcium or high magnesium) situations. Sulfur is the fourth major nutirient and is needed to help utilize nitrogen and to make true protein.
Magnesium (Mg)
Plants need magnesium to produce chlorophyll. Excess magnesium can cause soil compaction and reduce its availability to plants. Magnesium has a double positive charge, thus making it more difficult to reduce when it’s excessive. It also increases the pH faster than other positive charged minerals. Epsom Salt or Sol-Po-Mag are usually sufficient sources of magnesium. Hi-Mag Lime is used when large amounts are needed.
Proven Blends On Farms Since 2008
Tilmor's "Soil Amendment Blends" are produced by a local Co-op with over 15 years of experience in blending natural and organic soil amendments. The mineral-enriched blends applied to the soil have helped farmers improve the quality and shelf stability of their products while also enhancing the nutritional value for consumers.
Experience proves that by feeding the soil we get more microbes and earthworms working for us in the soil. By working with naturally occurring bacteria, we get healthier plants. Fruit from these plants will taste sweeter and have a longer shelf life.
The soil and living organisms in the soil should be fed with food rather than fertilizer. Humates, liquid fish, molasses, kelp, compost, rock powders, bacteria and others are food for soil life.
All of our blends are designed to supply the needed minerals and enhance life in the soil. The end result is a healthier plant that is naturally disease resistant and will provide a more delicious fruit.
